As an Osteopath, I have the privilege of being in this position pretty much every half hour of my working life.
I spend my time asking people about themselves and immediately it seems to build rapport.
Not just because I'm indulging their narcissistic tendencies, but because I'm in the position to help them and because I genuinely care about them and their health.
It confirms that the focus should be on the other, not on the self, If all I was interested in was myself, I'd never make anyone better.
My 'reward' is the next appointment when they tell me how much better they are.
Job satisfaction is measured on how much I have invested in them, not in how much I have had fun doing what I do (which, at times isn't that fun!)
It truly is amazing how much value people bring with them when you open the door for them to share that value.
